Every legendary in Pokémon Unbound: locations, requirements, and missions
Where every one of Unbound's 80-plus legendaries and mythicals is, what each one needs, which missions lock them, and which ones only come from Mystery Gift codes.
Short answer
Almost every legendary in Unbound is post-game. Before the Champion you can only get Hoopa (story), Cosmog on Vanilla, Type: Null at 20 missions, and Latias or Latios at 45. After the Champion, about 25 show up through portals for Portal Purge, a dozen more come from post-game missions, and Mewtwo, Genesect, Marshadow, Poipole and Meltan only come from Mystery Gift codes.
How legendary hunting works in Borrius
Become Champion first. Unbound has over 80 legendaries and mythicals, and almost all of them are post-game. After that, some just show up, some need a mission, and some only come from Mystery Gift codes. The sections below go in that order. The legendary hunt was the part of Unbound I looked forward to most, and it still beat my expectations.
Five things to know before you start:
- Day and night matter. Day is 5:00 AM to 7:59 PM, and a lot of portals are day-only or night-only. Get the Time Turner from mission #065. It shifts the clock 12 hours.
- Mission counts pay out. The Ranger at the Fallshore Mission HQ gives you Type: Null at 20, a Latiasite or Latiosite and its roamer at 45, and the Shiny Charm at 65.
- Mystery Gift opens after the League. Each code works once per save.
- Levels scale. On Difficult and above, every boss wild Pokémon scales to your highest level. Levels in the tables are Vanilla.
- Almost nothing is missable. Every Pokémon can be caught on 2.1.1.1.
The one real trap is Zygarde. Mission #070 “The Powerhouse of the Cell” builds one from cells. Release or trade it and the mission is gone forever. Box it and leave it there. I renamed mine so I’d never mistake it for trade fodder.
A blank level means I don’t have a number for that one.
During the main story
Hoopa is the only legendary the story gives you, and you can’t miss it. Cosmog depends on difficulty. On Vanilla the Route 12 bag is yours any time. On Difficult and above it’s post-game only.
The mission-count rewards come whenever you hit the count. 57 of the 84 missions open before the League, so you can hit 20 and 45 in the main game if you do them as they appear.
| Pokémon | Location | Requirement | Time | Level | Mission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hoopa | Crystal Peak summit | Joins you after the Prison Bottle sequence. Hoopa Unbound is fought at Vivill Town (Lv.53) and Crystal Peak (Lv.62) first | - | 62 (Crystal Peak boss fight) | Story |
| Cosmog | Route 12 beach (wiki also says Route 15), in a bag | No battle. Vanilla: any time. Difficult and above: post-game. Cosmoem at Lv.43, Solgaleo (day) or Lunala (night) at Lv.53 | - | - | - |
| Type: Null | Fallshore Mission HQ | Ranger reward for 20 completed missions. Silvally Memories come from Cube Corp. for 3 same-type Plates each | - | - | Milestone (20) |
| Latias or Latios | Roaming | At 45 missions the Ranger gives Latiasite or Latiosite and the matching one starts roaming. Which one depends on your character’s gender; they are locked to the opposite sex of the player | - | 40 | Milestone (45) |
| The other of Latias or Latios | Outside the Pokémon League | Complete #042 No Survivors with the roamer in your party | - | - | #042 No Survivors |
The story Hoopa fight at Crystal Peak is a double battle with Rayquaza. On Difficult and above, Rayquaza comes back while Hoopa is still up. On Vanilla it stays down once you knock it out. Focus Hoopa. You catch the real Rayquaza on the summit after the story. I wasted three turns on Rayquaza before that clicked.
Post-League, no mission required
This is the biggest group. Once you’re Champion, these just show up. Some need a certain party, but none need a mission. A lot of them count for Portal Purge (#050), marked in the last column.
Buy the ADM first. It’s ₽250,000 at the Seaport Shipyard and replaces Dive and Dig, and most of these are behind it. I sold half my bag to afford it and never regretted it.
Kanto, Johto and Hoenn
| Pokémon | Location | Requirement | Time | Level | Mission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Articuno | Frozen Heights, east of the KBT Expressway entrance | Post-game (Marlon and the Shadows capture it in the intro) | - | - | - |
| Zapdos | Thundercap Mountain peak | Post-game | - | - | - |
| Moltres | Cinder Volcano peak | Post-game | - | - | - |
| Raikou and Entei | Roaming | Interact with the Ruins of Void B1F portal; both roam afterwards. Both must be in your party for Suicune | - | 40 | #050 |
| Suicune | Ruins of Void, lowest chamber | Return to the Legendary Beast room with Raikou and Entei | - | - | #050 |
| Ho-Oh and Lugia | Ruins of Void, lowest chamber (where Aklove was fought) | After catching Suicune | - | - | #050 |
| Celebi | Redwood Village | Show the old man a Spiky-eared Pichu. That Pichu comes from the Breeder’s School in Seaport when you show a Pichu from the Vivill Woods swarm | - | - | - |
| Regirock | Great Desert, Desert Ruins | Post-game | - | - | #056 Statue of Regi is related |
| Regice | Frozen Forest, ice puzzle tomb | Post-game | - | - | - |
| Registeel | Route 18, crystal puzzle tomb | Post-game | - | - | - |
| Regigigas | Icy Hole B1F | Regirock, Regice and Registeel in your first three party slots | - | - | - |
| Regieleki and Regidrago | Icy Hole | DexNav Special Encounters: Regigigas caught and Gen 8 encounters active | - | - | - |
| Kyogre | Vivill Warehouse (underwater) | Blue Orb | - | - | - |
| Groudon | Cinder Volcano B2F | Red Orb | - | - | - |
| Jirachi | Crater Town, locked house | Talk to the Old Man to unlock the house | - | - | - |
| Deoxys | Route 13 and the Route 5 to 13 path | Jirachi in your party. The meteorites in Crater Town change its form | - | - | - |
For both Orbs, beat Véga at the Seaport Battleground (he’s there Monday, Wednesday and Friday) for his Darkinium Z, then talk to him at the Crater Town Gym. He hands you the Red Orb and the Blue Orb together. Groudon waits in Cinder Volcano and Kyogre in the underwater part of Vivill Warehouse.
The Johto chain goes in order, all in the Ruins of Void. You get there with the ADM during the last story mission.
- Touch the portal on Ruins of Void B1F. Raikou and Entei start roaming.
- Catch both. They flee every turn, but damage and status stick between encounters. If you knock one out, it respawns with new IVs after your next Hall of Fame entry.
- Go back to the Legendary Beast room with both in your party and catch Suicune.
- Ho-Oh and Lugia show up in the lowest chamber, where you fought Aklove.
Sinnoh and Unova
| Pokémon | Location | Requirement | Time | Level | Mission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Giratina | Distortion World, through the Rift Cave portal | Post-game. Griseous Orb for Origin Forme | - | - | - |
| Manaphy | Ruins of Void, underwater | Egg behind a Braille stone tablet | - | - | - |
| Phione | Breed Manaphy | - | - | - | - |
| Shaymin | Flower Paradise, northernmost restricted area | Post-game | - | - | - |
| Tornadus and Thundurus | Magnolia Fields, then roaming | Double battle on the old woman’s island; they cannot be caught there and roam afterwards. Beating them ends Magnolia Town’s eternal rain | - | 45 | - |
| Landorus | Magnolia Fields | Tornadus and Thundurus in your party | - | - | - |
| Enamorus | Magnolia Fields (DexNav) | Landorus in your party and Gen 8 encounters active. Therian Forme via the Reveal Glass | - | - | - |
| Reshiram | Crystal Peak 3F, north-east chamber | Post-game | Day | - | #050 |
| Zekrom | Crystal Peak 3F, north-east chamber | Post-game | Night | - | #050 |
| Kyurem | Victory Road snow area, Kyurem Cave | Post-game. DNA Splicers come with the Genesect gift code | - | - | - |
| Meloetta | Polder Town, next to the Pokémon Center | Post-game | Night | - | - |
Tornadus and Thundurus are the roamers people lose. They’re level 45 and try to run every turn. Damage and status stick between encounters, so land a Spore or paralysis the first time you see them. Chasing those two is the most annoyed I got in the whole post-game. If you faint one, it comes back with new IVs and nature after your next Hall of Fame entry.
Kalos, Alola and the portals
| Pokémon | Location | Requirement | Time | Level | Mission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xerneas | Redwood Forest, first area | Post-game | Day | - | #050 |
| Yveltal | Crystal Cave B1F | Post-game | Night | - | #050 |
| Volcanion | Cinder Volcano 2F | After re-beating the Elite Four (Title Defense) | - | - | - |
| Tapu Koko | Route 11, upper cliffs | Post-game | Any | - | #050 |
| Tapu Lele | Route 17 | Post-game | Any | - | #050 |
| Tapu Bulu | Route 9, lake island | Post-game | Any | - | #050 |
| Tapu Fini | Route 2, north-west of the Icicle Cave exit | Post-game | Any | - | #050 |
| Solgaleo or Lunala | Route 12 beach portal | The portal holds whichever form you do not have; bring the other one | - | - | #050 (optional) |
| Necrozma | Frost Mountain 3F, near the Route 8 exit | Solgaleo and Lunala in your party. N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer come with the Marshadow and Meltan codes; Ultranecrozium Z from #084 | Night | - | #050 |
| Nihilego | Route 14, dive spot | Post-game | Night | - | #050 |
| Buzzwole | Route 4 West, above the waterfall | Post-game | Day | - | #050 |
| Pheromosa | Great Desert, central canyon | Post-game | Day | - | #050 |
| Xurkitree | Thundercap Mountain 2F, north-west | Post-game | Night | - | #050 |
| Celesteela | Crater Town, in the crater | Post-game | Night | - | #050 |
| Kartana | Vivill Woods, north-west pond log | Post-game | Day | - | #050 |
| Guzzlord | Antisis Sewers South | Post-game | Night | - | #050 |
| Stakataka | Route 7, island south of the Fisherman’s house | Post-game | Day | - | #050 |
| Blacephalon | Magnolia Fields, north-west past the Cut trees | Post-game | Night | - | #050 |
| Eternal Flower Floette | Vivill Warehouse B5F, Command Center | Post-game (also available by gift code) | - | - | #050 |
| Zeraora | Thundercap Mountain 4F, hidden exit | Requires the ADM. On New Game+ it is available before the credits | - | - | - |
| Arceus | Dream Research Lab, Tarmigan Town | Show the scientist all 17 Plates. The Plate Maker at the Seaport Shipyard trades shards for them and ADM mining drops them | - | - | - |
The nine Ultra Beasts are most of Portal Purge. Carry Beast Balls. The Beast Ball Maker at Cube Corp. makes one for each Iron Ball. Four are day-only and five are night-only, so plan two laps of Borrius or get the Time Turner first. My Beast Ball stack ran out faster than I planned, so bring more than you think.
Post-game mission legendaries
These need a mission, and some need a chain of them. Two gates catch people:
- #027 and #059 both need 20 missions done and Type: Null.
- #065 The Daily Grind (for the Time Turner) needs #027 done, Dialga caught, and 23 daily events finished in a single day.
| Pokémon | Location | Requirement | Time | Level | Mission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mew | Fallshore Mission HQ | Mission reward, arrives with Mewnium Z | - | - | #017 Darwin Was Right |
| Palkia | Rift Cave | Lustrous Orb, the reward for the Dehara City mission | - | - | #004 A Rift in Space |
| Uxie | Outside the Dream Research Lab | Mission requires 20 missions done and Type: Null | - | - | #027 Guardians of the Lake |
| Mesprit | Shadow Base B3F, Zeph’s room | As above | - | - | #027 |
| Azelf | Route 18, above the Pokémon Center | As above | - | - | #027 |
| Dialga | Cave of Being | Lake trio in your party. Adamant Orb (the #027 reward) for Origin Forme | - | - | #027 |
| Rayquaza | Crystal Peak summit | Bring the Jade Orb, the reward for #014 | - | 70 | #014 Blazing Emeralds |
| Heatran | Cinder Volcano 1F | Magma Stone, the reward for #039 | - | - | #039 Master Incubator |
| Cresselia | Fullmoon Island | Dynamax battle during the mission. Catching it gives the Lunar Wing | - | 60 | #066 The Endless Nightmare |
| Darkrai | Newmoon Island, then Tarmigan Inn | The first (nightmare) battle is a Lv.75 Dynamax fight and cannot be caught. The catchable one is at Tarmigan Inn with the Member Card, the #066 reward | - | 75 | #066 |
| Victini | Seaport Battleground | Clear the Leaders Gauntlet on any tier; the Picnicker then gives it | - | - | #025 Gimme a V |
| Cobalion | Victory Road, cave area | Mission requires 20 missions done and Type: Null | - | - | #059 Swords of Justice |
| Terrakion and Virizion | Victory Road, main area | As above | - | - | #059 |
| Keldeo | Route 17, in a cave created during the mission | After the three above | - | - | #059 |
| Diancie | KBT Expressway, behind a collapsed wall | Carbink (Lv.75) appears during the mission, Diancie after. Lv.25 on New Game+ before the post-game | - | 80 | #038 Major Miner (also gives Diancite) |
| Zygarde | Dresco Town | Built from Zygarde Cells during the mission (Power Construct). Releasing or trading it breaks the mission permanently | - | - | #070 The Powerhouse of the Cell |
| Magearna | Tomb of Borrius | Tomb puzzle; #076 starts automatically when the puzzle is solved | - | - | #076 Tomb Raider |
| Original Color Magearna | National Dex reward | Capture all 809 Pokémon | - | 10 | #069 The National Pokédex |
Do #066 early. Darkrai’s first fight is a level 75 Dynamax boss you can’t catch, and people burn Master Balls on it. Save yours. My thumb was on the button before I remembered. The real Darkrai is at Tarmigan Inn once you have the Member Card. Cresselia is a Dynamax fight too, but you can catch that one, and it gives you the Lunar Wing.
Victini is the cheapest one here if you can beat eight gym rematches in a row. The Leaders Gauntlet counts on Vanilla tier, and you get healed between fights. It felt like the easiest mythical I’ve ever earned.
Mystery Gift code-only legendaries
These five aren’t in the game anywhere else. You need them for the 809-Pokémon National Dex, and the Original Color Magearna reward needs that. Beat the League, then give the codes to the green deliveryman on the second floor of any Pokémon Center. Each code works once per save. I typed every one of these slowly, because a typo felt like it would cost me forever.
| Pokémon | Code | Comes with | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mewtwo | 6ZT5ZX7RN4KK | Mewtwonite X | Mewtwonite Y comes with Poipole |
| Genesect | 7HY9JN6EE5YY | DNA Splicers | The Splicers are how you fuse Kyurem |
| Marshadow | 5GQ3CU5UZ7WS | N-Solarizer | Needed for Dusk Mane Necrozma |
| Poipole | 4QP1SH1BN8JF | Mewtwonite Y | Evolves into Naganadel |
| Meltan | 8VE4VF5PA4NH | N-Lunarizer | Evolves into Melmetal; Lunarizer for Dawn Wings Necrozma |
More codes for Pokémon you can also get in-game or don’t need:
- Galarian Articuno: 2XH4TC5JY4MG
- Galarian Zapdos: 9TA2WT6TW5AP
- Galarian Moltres: 4NV7CX6YX1SD
- Eternal Flower Floette: 1YX5RA7UR9MF
- Dada Zarude: 3YT4BV7PH4UT
Enter the Zarude one. Registering a Galar Pokémon turns on the Gen 8 DexNav Special Encounters, and you can’t reach Regieleki, Regidrago or Enamorus without it.
Seven Gen 8 legendaries aren’t in the game at all. Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus, Kubfu, Glastrier, Spectrier and Calyrex only come by trade through Unbound Cloud from other CFRU hacks. They’re not part of the 809, so skipping them won’t cost you the Black Trainer Card.
Mega Stones you pick up along the way
You’ll grab a lot of Mega Stones while you hunt, because several come from the same missions. Half my bag was Mega Stones by the end, and I loved it:
- Latiasite or Latiosite: the 45-mission milestone
- Diancite: #038 Major Miner, same mission as Diancie
- Your two missing starter stones (Garchompite, Tyranitarite, Metagrossite): Portal Purge, with a Master Ball
- Mewtwonite X and Y: the Mewtwo and Poipole codes
The rest of the 49 come from Mega Trainers on routes (Alakazite on Route 11, Gyaradosite on Route 13, Absolite on Crystal Peak, about a dozen in all), tablet puzzles from #007 “Am I Blind?” (Banettite, Charizardite X, Mawilite), hidden pickups (Gengarite on Victory Road 3F with Rock Climb, Salamencite on Victory Road 2F past Dive), and the Cube Corp. Mega Stone Maker for the Hoenn starters. Every stone and where it is lives in missables and mistakes.
Planning your post-game sweep
This order wastes the least time. I did it out of order and walked Borrius twice for nothing:
- Buy the ADM at the Seaport Shipyard.
- Clear the Ruins of Void story mission. That starts the Johto chain.
- Push your mission count to 20 so #027 and #059 open.
- Do #066 for the Member Card, #014 for the Jade Orb, and #038 for Diancie.
- Enter the Mystery Gift codes for the five exclusives and Zarude.
- Do one lap of Borrius by day and one by night for the portals. Or finish #065 first and let the Time Turner handle the second lap.
The rest of the post-game, Battle Frontier and Battleground schedule included, is in the postgame guide. Whether these fights scale depends on your difficulty, which is in the review. Coming from Johto? Here’s SoulGold’s legendary locations.
Frequently asked questions
Can you catch legendaries before the Elite Four in Pokémon Unbound?
Only a few. Hoopa joins you in the story, Cosmog is in the Route 12 bag before the post-game on Vanilla, Type: Null is your reward for 20 missions, and Latias or Latios starts roaming at 45. Everything else waits until you're Champion.
How do you get Mewtwo in Pokémon Unbound?
Mystery Gift code only. Beat the League, then give the code to the green deliveryman on the second floor of any Pokémon Center. Mewtwo comes holding Mewtwonite X. Poipole's code gives you Mewtwonite Y.
Where is Rayquaza in Pokémon Unbound?
Crystal Peak summit in the post-game, level 70. Bring the Jade Orb from mission #014 Blazing Emeralds. The Rayquaza in the story's Hoopa double battle is a boss fight. The one to catch is on the summit.
What is Portal Purge in Pokémon Unbound?
Mission #050 from Professor Log after you're Champion. Catch all 25 Portal Pokémon, including the beasts and birds at the Ruins of Void, Reshiram, Zekrom, Xerneas, Yveltal, the Tapus, the Ultra Beasts and Necrozma. You get a Master Ball and the two starter Mega Stones you didn't pick.
Do legendary levels scale with difficulty in Pokémon Unbound?
Yes, on Difficult and above they scale to your highest-level Pokémon, so any level you see online is the Vanilla number. The levels I have are Hoopa 62, Rayquaza 70, Diancie 80, Cresselia 60, Darkrai 75, and the roamers at 40 and 45.
